77. I was in pageants all through high school and college and I'm just wondering why this poor girl didn't use a public speaking coach prior to the pageant. Everyone knows that with the help of a good coach you can learn to think on your feet and sound intelligent!! I live in South Carolina and heard on the radio this morning that she had a 3.5 gpa in high school. I don't think she's a total idiot! I feel sorry for her though! At least bad press is better than no press!

Since you insist on reminding everyone that there ARE some people who can speak in public with no difficulty, let me remind you that are some people who can NOT, and this girl appears to be one of them. 84. Judith, are you ignoring the statistics that the number one phobia of people is speaking in public. Throw in a camera and a national t.v. audience, and it's undoubtedly a horrifying experience for most people, especially for an unexperienced teenager.

85. I'm sorry, but I must agree with most of the posters here: this girl is brainless! It's not her fault though. American culture is neck-deep in stupidity. Intelligence is seen as the enemy and stupidity is put on a high pedestal and worshipped. How else can we explain George W. Bush serving two full terms as president of the most powerful country in the world; how else can we explain such Hollywood phenomenon like "Jackass" and "Punk'd", or the celebrity of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Britney Spears? Ironically, Miss SC did answer the question properly because she was a shining example of why that 20 percent of Americans cannot find their own country on a map! The fact that some people on here are defending her and saying "oh she's adorable" and "oh, she was just nervous". PLEASE! You defend her and this pageant, you defend the culture of stupidity that has inundated America. Why are Americans so dumb? Her answer should have been: "Because millions of Americans are watching outmoded beauty pageants instead of turning off the television and reading more books".

88. My God, some of you people are cruel! I'm not a huge fan of beauty contests; I personally find them a bit lame, but why criticize this young girl? Not everyone can think with lightening fast speed when asked a question like that. Jeez, it's a beauty contest, not a meeting of MENSA. I'd like to see how many of you would answer a question on a topic you were unfamiliar with in front of a huge audience.
