Miss Teen Babbler -- But I CAN Speak!

She's the laughingstock of the Internet and beyond, after her babbling, dippy answer to a question at the "Miss Teen USA" pageant this past weekend, but Lauren Caitlin Upton got her chance at redemption today, courtesy of the "Today" show.

The 18-year-old South Carolina bumbling beauty got the chance at a redo, with a slightly less cubist answer, telling Matt Lauer and Ann Curry that she intended to study "special effects" in school (like how to make Blondish sound like English on live TV?) and even explained what a lunar eclipse was. Brilliant!

If you're one of the four people on the net who haven't seen Caitlin's shining moment, check it, uhmmmm, out.

46. If is person is in beauty pageants, the contestant usually is prepared and trained to be natural and speak intelligently in front of the camera. Most of the time they are fairly educated too, but sometimes if nerves get the best of a person she will end up looking idiotic. I had fantastic grades in college, and I took a communications class my sophomore year. My report was really good, but when I got up to speak in front of the class about my findings I went blank. I babbled on about irrelevant stuff, and I really made a boob out of myself. My face was crimson, and I was so embarrassed. I don't think the girl is stupid, but she could have been nervous. It happened to me, and I am not a moron but I just couldn't speak in front of an audience. My lips ended up being sand paper. lol

47. Wow, now that I read through the comments I recommend that the people calling her stupid or a moron should work on their own grammar. If I were dissing someone I would at least try to sound intelligent about it and not make a fool out of myself.

That is wonderful that some of you have an answer to this question. The only difference is that you have five minutes to write it out and reread what you wrote. She has a few seconds to think of something and a total of 30 seconds to answer it.

PS Public speakers usually have a speech prepared before they speak...

48. Hey Kat, her Mom has dragged her to these things since she was a little kid and put her through this. She has no excuse to blow such an easy question. And Kat, you are a moron also.

51. The question was why can't 1/5 of Americans not find the U.S. on a map, not please explain the mysteries of the universe! Some of you just need to go ahead and ask her out, you might get lucky and get the answer you want, hopefully you speak idiot.

52. What is really strange is that, in a way, her babbling, disconnected nonsense was a demonstration of the answer. Is Miss Teen South Carolina a postmodern genius? Uh..no. Many American young people are not getting the education they should and, sadly, even some of those who are privileged to go to a school where quality education is available, don't take advantage of it. We've all seen it - the person on the street interviews where they ask young Americans to name the Vice President or some other basic question - and they don't know the answer. Nor do they care that they don't know. I laugh, but deep inside, I'm terrified that these kids are the future of our nation.

53. She actually answered this question better than I would have. If it was me up in front of all those people on national tv, I would have been too nervous to even speak. But really people, the girl's nervousness probably effected her ability to fully comprehend the question at the time and to properly articulate an answer. It can happen to even the brightest of people.

54. We had to prepare a speech, but we had to hand ours into the professor. We were only allowed to look at an outline. I still went blank even after studying the material.

55. Aren't they told what the question's going to be before going on stage?

She still sounds dumb..

56. Yo Mike B.....you sound as dumb as mizzz SC....what do you mean give her a break? LISTEN To what she said.....scary how someone that old can be so IGNORANT!!! has nothing to do with "awww but she is nice" or "awwww she is cute" or "awww she made a mistake" HOW IS HER ANSWER A MISTAKE???

57. Again, to those saying "you couldn't do it either".... let me just say this. AGAIN.

I'm sorry you can't think on your toes or speak in front of a crowd. Maybe you should work on it. But don't assume no one else is unable to do these things.

58. I stated that she probably would have been prepared for the beauty pageant. They prepare even before kindergarten. I have a degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and a degree in French too. I had a bad case of nerves that day, and it certainly doesn't make me a "moron". Some people just blow things when they really shouldn't. People need to have the confidence to pull it off and believe in themselves. It is very intimidating to go up and speak in front of 50 people. I am sure you have botched things up a few times in life yourself. It can happen to anyone.
