Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe Split

Reese and Ryan splitReese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have separated. The couple's rep released a statement to TMZ Monday morning that says "We are saddened to announce that Reese & Ryan have decided to formally separate. They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time."

Sources tell TMZ Witherspoon has contacted celebrity divorce lawyer Robert Kaufman, who has represented Jennifer Aniston, Roseanne and Lisa Marie Presley.

Reese and Ryan Photo GallerySources say Witherspoon spoke with Kaufman about divorcing Ryan Phillippe, her husband of seven years. The couple has two children. They met at Witherspoon's 21st birthday party.

As for why Witherspoon contacted Kaufman, we're told it was not triggered by one event. Rather, one connected source says it was "cumulative."

Divorce papers have not yet been filed.

107. I am saddened and shocked. They always appeared to be very much in love and had a mutual understanding of taking care of the sharing of their childrens needs. He made a movie, she stayed home. She made a movie, he stayed home. It seemed to all of Hollywoeed and the world that it was working for them, and as recentely as the Oscars, she thanked hin for hiis love and support. Well....I guess that's why it's called ACTING!! Hope they are good to each other for the sake of their 2 beautiful children.

108. I feel very sorry for their children. It is hard enough to have a relationship on a daily basis. I can only imagine the strain that being a high profile star can have on a relationship. I wish the best for their children and hope that they put them first.

114. Why is it that whenever one member of a famous couple wins an award, the divorce is not far behind? Lately it's been the women winning the awards, and the husbands not being able to take it, but the story is age-old. Why is it that the Alex Baldwin's, Chad Lowe's and Ryan Phillippe's either can't handle their wives' talent or become repulsive to those wives after they've made it big?

116. I love how the ignorant are pointing fingers. We don't know what happened and cannot accurately call anyone a "megabitch" or "stoner". I believe in opinions and I have tons of them. But come on the real truth is: they were an awesomely hot couple with an all American feel to them. I am sad to see them part ways. Reese is smart, sophisticated and successful and Ryan is droolworthy. A damn shame.

117. It is so sad that they are breaking up. It was one couple you really were rooting for. I think Reese Witherspoon is just a doll, and hope she makes it out ok. I am sure Ryan got sick of sitting around watching his career hit a wall and hers take off. Although unlike Jessica Simpson I think Reese would pick her family over fame whereas Jessica picked fame and turned into a skank.

119. I AM VERY SAD ABOUT THE SPLIT. KNOWING HOW DIFFICULT MARRIAGE IS IN HOLLYWOOD,THEY EVEN WENT TO THERAPY. THEY KNEW WHAT THEY HAD TO DO TO MAKE THEIR MARRIAGE WORK AND THEY STILL SPLIT,HOW VERY SAD. I HOPE THEY CAN STILL MAKE IT WORK AND CONTINUE TO BE GREAT PARENTS TO THEIR CHILDREN. 120. Here this beautiful couple is divorcing and Britney and her scalowag husband are still together. Something is really wrong here. I always thought they were the most beautiful couple, and seemed to put their family first. I guess not. Why are these people not bothering to work it out? I am so surprised and really disappointed in them. I have always loved Reese and thought Ryan was such a hunk. I have to aask this couple---what can be so bad that it cannot be worked out? Your line was always that you were committed to your family. This controdicts everything you have said in the press.
